Why Non-Irish People Enjoy St. Paddy’s Day So Much

I am not Irish. I am mostly German, with a whole bunch of other European countries mixed in.

I have never really celebrated St. Paddy’s Day. I may have gone out for a few drinks with friends in college, but that’s about it. As a non-Irish person I have always found the obsession with St. Paddy’s day very strange.

This year I am going to a St. Paddy’s day parade with a bunch of my close friends. Like everyone else, I will drink green beer (it sounds gross), and dress myself head to toe in shades of green. Being a very curious person, I cannot help but wonder WHY I am doing all of this.

St. Patrick means nothing to me. I just read that he brought Christianity to Ireland. He used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. I fail to see how this has turned into a drinking holiday.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I enjoy dressing up in silly clothes, getting drunk and going to parades, I would just like to understand why I am doing it.

So, I guess the title of this post is a bit deceiving. I DON’T actually know why non-Irish people enjoy St. Paddy’s Day. But, in a few hours I will definitely find out. Check back in a few days, to read the answer I come up with.

In the meantime, HAPPY ST. PADDY’S DAY!!!
